dear doula: bespoke — Every Story Ceramics

A bespoke order like no other; Laura got in touch after she’d given birth to her beautiful baby boy. A precious time and memory that she wanted to honour with a bespoke vase for her doula.

For those that aren’t sure what a doula is or does, it’s someone incredibly special, that helps women through pregnancy and birth to ensure they have a positive experience that they can look back on fondly.

Laura and her doula formed a beautiful friendship and it was our pleasure to create such a special gift for such a momentous occasion.

We worked with Laura on the overall design of the vase, ensuring that it represented their partnership. The low curved shape of the vase symbolises the natural silhouette of the female form, while the strong handles represent support. To create such a shape we used the hand coiled technique, where layers of clay are placed on top of each other, moulding the clay into shape as it’s blended together.

A soft, flowing edge alludes to the beauty of childbirth and the delicate white glaze embodies the purity of new life.

The perfect final sentiment, we embossed the birth date on the base of the vase.

We hope this vase reminds Laura’s doula, and every other doula, how much their care and support is valued.
