blackwood norfolk: bespoke art
Nestled near the North Norfolk coastline is a unique woodland retreat. The exterior is clad in charred Accoya wood, hence the name, which gives a wonderfully Scandinavian mood that works in harmony with the wooded surroundings. Yet, when you open the door the interior is bright with warm, earthy tones throughout giving a real home-from-home feel.
We recently had the pleasure of working with Blackwood’s creator, Sarah, who has been carefully sourcing and commissioning bespoke pieces. She had a vision for the latest addition, a stoneware wall hanging inspired by the book 'Abode' and we were delighted to bring this to life.
We experimented with a mixture of buff clays, with a variety of grain and grogginess. We hand-formed beads and created discs which when high-fired in the kiln reveal their raw, biscuity tones and tactile surface. We dipped some of the discs in a pure white glaze which worked perfectly alongside the earthy colours of the clay and reflected the feel of the cabin’s interior.
Finally, Sarah expertly assembled everything to create the final composition. Each piece was strung onto the most perfect driftwood branch which she’d found on the nearby beach, it now hangs beautifully in the light-filled hallway.
It was such a delight to see these photos of the finished hanging, looking completely at home in this peaceful space and amongst many other one of a kind handmade pieces.
