settle x every story | cosy mug
‘Settle down and switch off’ is the ethos of Settle Norfolk, a slow living holiday retreat that is the shared project of Jo and John Morfoot. Jo is a celebrated florist and stylist, and John runs Morway’s reclamation yard nearby.
We had the pleasure of making some pieces for this very special little hideaway, our White Flecked Plates and Toasted Coasters, which are now perfectly at home in the charming Lakeside cabin.
As well as the cabin Jo set up the Settle Shop, a small space that supports independent producers from across the UK. We were delighted when Jo mentioned that she was looking for handmade ceramic mugs to sit alongside the other wonderful makers products; and so the story of the ‘Cosy Mug’ began.
Jo had the great idea of combining two of our mug designs to create the perfect ‘Settle’ mug.
Each piece is hand-built from an earthy flecked clay and is dipped in a soft matte glaze, which allows the natural speckles in the clay to show through. The subtle ochre band where the clay and glaze meet adds a hint of extra warmth, matching the earthy tones of Settle beautifully!
We both share a love for natural materials and celebrate their unique characteristics. From the very beginning, we’ve always used glazes that don’t cover up the beauty of the clay, only enhance it.
After the final glaze firing, the natural iron flecks in the clay can raise slightly, so each piece is carefully sanded by hand to ensure they are perfectly smooth, yet keep that beautiful tactile appearance.
To top off this amazing project, these beautiful images were created by India Hobson of Haarkon. We’ve admired her work for many years and they really capture the perfect evening by the fire with a mulled wine!
