travel stories: lake district

Our first stop was to Silverdale, a coastal town to the south of the lakes. I really wanted to start our week here after recently learning that this was our Grandfathers favourite place to holiday. It is a beautiful small town, nice and quiet, and the beaches stretch far out to the horizon line. The tide was starting to creep back in when we arrived so we took a walk along the sea front path, admiring the rocky landscape and hidden caves that were dotted amongst the rocks.

…It was lovely to think that our grandfather had admired these views too.

Keswick was our next destination and on our first day here, we walked up one of the surrounding hills named Wella Crag. After a steep hike, we were greeted with the most stunning views across the Derwent water. I could have sat and watched this view all day, taking in the glistening water that snaked its way through the valley, surrounded by the undulating hills that all had their own characterful name.

Can you spot Beatrix Potter’s idyllic home..

Every day I felt like there was a view, texture, colour or sound that I could take back to the studio, that would inspire some new ideas for our ceramics.

One of our pieces that has taken inspiration from the beautiful British coastline is the Cove Mug.

Handmade using flecked clay, we have gently embossed the mugs surface to give an organic, linear texture. The piece is then finished in a beautiful matte, white glaze and a blue-charcoal accent, which falls into the inside of the mug.

We apply this blue-charcoal glaze carefully to the rim just before the final firing. After appearing from the kiln, the glaze has gently fallen down the inside of the rim, reminding us of muted blue waters, washing over the shoreline.
